How much output do dirty panels lose?
CSIRO research puts soiling-related output loss at 15–25% under moderate soiling conditions. The actual loss depends on panel angle, local dust and salt load, and whether bird droppings are present. Panels at shallow tilts near the coast lose more because they do not self-clean in rain as effectively.
Do solar panels clean themselves in rain?
Partially. Rain clears loose dust from steeply pitched panels reasonably well. It does not remove bird droppings, salt deposits, or compacted dust on flat-mounted panels. If your inverter data shows a consistent output drop that does not recover after rain, you have contamination that rain alone will not shift.
Is it safe to clean panels yourself?
The cleaning method itself — purified water and a soft brush — is safe. The hazard is roof access. If your panels are on a two-storey roof or steep pitch, the risk is not the cleaning, it is the fall. Consumer pressure washers are also too high-pressure for panel glass and can crack the protective coating on older installations.
Do you use chemicals on solar panels?
No. Purified water only — no detergents, no solvents. Detergents leave residue that attracts dust and reduces output. Purified water evaporates cleanly with no deposits. We do not walk on panels and work from the roof surface beside the array or from a water-fed pole from below.
